I had a bit of trouble (i.e. crashes) trying to play Portal 2 co-op between two machines on the same network. Here's how we dealt with it. This works for PCs and Macs; can't tell you much about consoles.

1. Write down the local IP address of one of the machines (the 'host'). If you don't know how to find that, look here.
2. Open Portal 2 on both machines. Go to Options, Keyboard/Mouse and set Allow Developer Console to 'Enabled'. You can now hit ' ` ' (between Tab and Esc, usually) to bring up the console and enter commands.
3. On the host, enter 'sv_lan 1'.
4. On the client, enter 'connect <host IP>', where <host IP> is the address you wrote down in step 1.
5. On the host, enter 'map mp_coop_start' to play the tutorial, or 'map mp_coop_lobby_2' to go straight to the hub. To start on other levels, check out the map list here.

Disclaimer: I have only actually played co-op for about half an hour before my father realized he hated having to cooperate, so there may be problems later. Hope it works for you.
